Preserving History Through AI: A Visit to the Arquivo Público do Estado de São Paulo by CGC Scientist

Last week, Paulo Sergio Rufino Henrique, a scientist affiliated with CTIF Global Capsule, visited the Arquivo Público do Estado de São Paulo to witness an extraordinary intersection between history, culture, and emerging technologies.

During the visit, Paulo was welcomed by Professor Thiago Nicodemo, Director of the Archive and History Professor at Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). He was also accompanied by Professor José Maria Pereira Lopes, a renowned film restoration expert from MIS – Museu da Imagem e do Som.

Professor Thiago is leading one of Brazil’s most significant public innovation projects in recent years. Using artificial intelligence, his team is reconstructing the portraits of freed enslaved individuals based on historical descriptions written by Luiz Gama, the pioneering Afro-Brazilian abolitionist and lawyer. This initiative brings together historical scholarship, AI technologies, and ethical data practices to preserve and rehumanize a critical part of Brazil’s past.

For Paulo, the experience was deeply moving and intellectually profound. As someone working on the frontlines of future network technologies like 6G, he saw in this project a clear example of how AI can do more than predict or optimize — it can restore, include, and educate. These reconstructed portraits are more than technical artifacts; they are acts of remembrance and resistance, helping future generations access stories that had long been marginalized or erased.

The initiative aligns closely with the mission of CTIF Global Capsule, which advocates for ethical, inclusive, and human-centered innovation. Paulo believes that the 6G era must be built on these values — not only to connect people, but to connect them meaningfully, with a deep sense of history and social responsibility.

He congratulated Professor Thiago Nicodemo and his team for their groundbreaking work and called the project a shining example of how public institutions in Brazil can lead the way in using technology to preserve and reinterpret cultural heritage.

As Paulo noted, “This is technology with purpose — not just building the future, but reclaiming the past.”
